Sunday lunch in Hathersage

A carvery of locally reared meats with homemade gravy, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, creamy mash and cauliflower cheese. £16.95, and worth booking for.

The Little John serves a Sunday carvery every Sunday from 12pm until 8pm in the centre of Hathersage. It is £16.95 for a selection of locally reared meats with homemade gravy, Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes, creamy mash and cauliflower cheese, with pigs in blankets £3.95 extra. Booking is recommended.

Sunday is the busiest day of our week, and the one the kitchen builds around. Meat from local farms, gravy that took the best part of a day, and Yorkshire puddings the size of the plate. It runs straight through from noon until eight, so you can eat at two or at seven and get the same thing.

It does sell out. If you are coming off the hill and want a table, book before you set off rather than after.

Make a day of it

Walk first, eat after

Stanage Edge is a couple of miles up the hill and most people are back down in time for a late lunch. Padley Gorge, Higger Tor and the walk along the Derwent all work the same way: out in the morning, carvery in the afternoon, and a pint in front of the fire before anyone thinks about driving.

Or do not drive at all. There are eight rooms upstairs and two cottages next door, which turns Sunday lunch into a weekend.

Asked often

Sunday lunch

What time is Sunday lunch served at The Little John?

Sunday lunch is served every Sunday from 12pm until 8pm at The Little John on Station Road in Hathersage. It runs straight through, so there is no gap between lunch and evening service.

How much is the Sunday carvery?

The Sunday carvery is £16.95. That includes a selection of locally reared meats, homemade gravy, Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes, creamy mash and cauliflower cheese. Pigs in blankets are £3.95 extra.

Do I need to book for Sunday lunch?

Booking is strongly recommended. Sunday is the busiest service of the week and the carvery does sell out, particularly in the middle of the afternoon.

Is there a vegetarian or vegan option on Sunday?

Yes. The carvery has a vegetarian option, and the Sunday menu also carries a butternut squash and pearl onion tart tatin and a pesto couscous salad, both suitable for vegans.

Can children have a smaller portion?

Yes. Smaller portions are available at the carvery, so children are not faced with a full plate. Just ask when you order.

Do you serve anything other than roasts on a Sunday?

Yes. Alongside the carvery there is a full selection of favourites including the steak and ale pie, beer-battered cod, the Little John burger and beef lasagna.
